The player has featured in even more games than Johnson with 15 but he has also had a knock and had to sit on the sidelines recently. The 22-year-old though will not be back too soon and the Owls won’t want to rush him back either. The good news though is that both could return ahead of the January window to potentially give Sheffield Wednesday some momentum heading into the second half of the campaign.

The Verdict

Sheffield Wednesday are still play-off contenders and will want to strengthen in January to ensure they keep it up. With so many players set to return though at the back end of the year, they might not need to do too much recruitment.

Molyneux was substituted at half time of Saturday’s League Two defeat at Port Vale with caretaker boss Antony Sweeney explaining the forward had felt a tightness in his calf.

The 23-year-old was one of Pools’ more threatening players in the opening 45 minutes at Vale Park but Sweeney admitted he was withdrawn as a precaution ahead of a crucial run of games over the December period.

And Molyneux’s withdrawal is likely to mean he will miss the club’s trip to face Sheffield Wednesday in EFL Trophy action this week.

Currently in its second year as title sponsor of the Papa John’s Trophy, the pizza delivery chain is giving EFL football fans the chance to see their team play for free, by giving away hundreds of tickets through the 21/22 competition.

Last season saw a one-of-a-kind event with two Papa John’s Trophy finals played at Wembley over one weekend, seeing the conclusion of both the 2019/20 and 2020/21 competitions with Salford City and Sunderland AFC coming out on top in two hotly contested finals. For this season’s competition, Papa John’s is excited to welcome fans into EFL stadiums to watch Papa John’s Trophy matches for the very first time.
