Cambridge United head coach Mark Bonner wants his side to continue to build momentum by progressing through their FA Cup tie at Northampton Town.

The U’s face League Two opponents in their first round tie tomorrow as they look to claim a third straight victory.

United have been buoyed this week by victories against Morecambe and AFC Wimbledon that have propelled Bonner’s side up to tenth in League One.

The U’s have had big FA Cup ties against Manchester United and Leeds United in recent years, and whilst the prospect of having games such as those is a motivation in the competition, the head coach is focused on the immediate task ahead.

The excitement of the competition comes probably from what could be in this competition, and everyone like us starting out in the lower levels of the Football League pyramid is striving for those big games and occasions,” Bonner said.

“Everybody wants them but few teams can have them, and you have to win games and do well to get there. Obviously that’s our intention, to see how far we can go in the competition.

Jon Brady’s side have the second best defensive record in the league, and have won their last four matches in League Two, ahead of tomorrow’s clash at Sixfields.

“They’re really hard to create chances against. They’ve had very few chances conceded in the last four games, in the wins that they’ve had,” Bonner added.

We played them in pre-season, so we have a bit of knowledge of Northampton, and now we have to go into the game and try and back up what’s been a really good week for ourselves so far, because league or cup, momentum’s important, and we want to try and continue that.”

The Cobblers have started their League Two campaign well following relegation last term, sitting third in the division after 15 games

“They’ve had lots of clean sheets, a physicality about them, some directness to their play.
