Sunderland haven’t won at the DW Stadium since January 2013, when Martin O’Neill and Roberto Martinez were in the dugouts to compete in a Premier League fixture. We ran out 3-2 winners that day despite going behind in the opening 5 minutes.

In major cup competitions it’s only the second time the two clubs have met after an FA Cup third round tie back in 2008 when Steve Bruce got one over on his x-Manchester United colleague Roy Keane in a 3-0 win for the Latics.

Tonight is a strange one, the two sides meet for a place in the last 16 of the Carabao Cup at a time when a cup-run is way down on the priority list, as Sunderland sit behind league leaders Wigan Athletic going into the fixture.

League Cup runners-up in 2006, Wigan’s priority this season will be gaining promotion to the Championship, but they will certainly be keen to get one over on their division rivals Sunderland on Tuesday night.

The Latics, who famously won the 2013 FA Cup, finished 20th in League One last term but have been impressive in the early stages of the 2021-22 campaign, picking up 16 points from their opening seven matches, which has left them at the top of the table.

Leam Richardso ill enter the contest off the back of a 4-1 win over Accrington in the league on Saturday, which followed a 2-1 success at home to Doncaster Rovers after the international break.

In terms of this competition, Wigan secured their spot in the third round courtesy of a penalty-shootout victory over Bolton Wanderers on August 14.

The Latics have already lost to Sunderland this season, though, suffering a 2-1 defeat at the Stadium of Light when the two teams locked horns in League One on August 7.
