It’s officially gameday, and while expectations for the 2021 Detroit Lions remain relatively low, there’s not quite like the excitement of the first NFL Sunday of the season. And for the Lions, Sunday denotes the embarkment of a new era. Dan Campbell is here in all of his charismatic glory, and he brought a coaching staff with him that does inspire some true hope.

Whether that hope will be cashed in this year, next year, or maybe never at all is very much to be determined, but that’s what makes this whole darn thing—especially Week 1—so much fun. We have no idea what’s about to happen, but by 1 p.m. ET, we’re all going to be glued to our televisions to see.

For the Detroit Lions, their season kicks off this weekend with a NFC battle with the San Francisco 49ers.

Lions head coach Dan Campbell was asked earlier this week what jumped out on film when he reviewed the tape of his team’s first opponent of the season.

“What jumps out is the one who’s not there and that’s (Nick) Bosa, which we know is going to be back. I think (49ers defensive coordinator) DeMeco Ryans is putting his own kind of spin or flavor on this defense,” Campbell said.

Detroit went 5-11 in 2020, which actually isn’t all that bad relative to what the team has looked like overall in the past several years. The Lions finished last in the NFC North and are still rebuilding. The Stafford era is over, as they traded him to the Los Angeles Rams for young Goff this offseason.

While Goff doesn’t always get as much credit as he deserves, he’ll need to continue improving if he’s going to make this Lions team successful over the next few years.

A former No. 1 overall pick, Goff went 42-27 as starter with the Rams before being traded. Unfortunately for him, Detroit has the weakest receiving group in all of football, meaning tight end T.J. Hockenson could be his favorite target
