Following a big 3-1 win over Chicago on Saturday, Atlanta United undergoes a quick turnaround into Concacaf Champions League Quarterfinal action against fellow MLS side Philadelphia Union. Unlike Saturday’s match, this one will be nationally televised, which hopefully translates to less time confusedly flipping through TV guides and more time enjoying some #CCLFever.

This will be the first time in the Five Stripes’ three consecutive quarterfinal appearances that the opponent will not be a Liga MX side, the past two of which ended Atlanta’s run in the competition.

Although Philadelphia is a more familiar league opponent, the two teams have not shared a pitch since the 2019 Eastern Conference Semifinal, which Atlanta won 2-0. Since then, the Union have gone on to claim a Supporters Shield in the 2020, but did not play United during the season (although that probably wouldn’t have made a difference, if we’re being honest).

A strong home result will be crucial for Atlanta to progress into the semifinals for the first time, so get ready with our match preview and lineup prediction, then join us below in the match thread as we watch the Five Stripes’ CCL run unfold.

Atlanta defeated L.D. Alajuelense 1-0 in back to back round of 16 matches to advance to the quarter finals. They most recently defeated the Chicago Fire 3-1 in the MLS regular season.

Philadelphia finished Deportivo Saprissa in dominant fashion with a 4-0 victory in leg 2 of the round of 16. They had a 5-0 aggregate. They are coming off a 2-1 loss to Inter Miami in the MLS regular season.

Atlanta United continued their solid run of form as they made it four games without defeat this year with a win over Chicago Fire in the MLS last time out. They come into this all-American CONCACAF Champions League clash with Philadelphia Union full of confidence, more so than the away side who are yet to win from their two MLS clashes so far.

They were beaten by Inter Miami at the weekend and with the hosts on such a solid run, it would be a surprise if Atlanta failed to claim the advantage from this first leg.
