The 2021 MLB season gets underway in earnest as a pair of NL West rivals take the field in the Rocky Mountains. It’s the Los Angeles Dodgers starting the defense of their first World Series title since 1988 as they open a four-game set on the road against the Colorado Rockies Thursday afternoon.
Los Angeles claimed the NL West crown and went on to win the World Series by beating Tampa Bay in six games. Colorado fell apart in the shortened season to finish fourth in the NL West race to miss the postseason. Last season, the Dodgers won seven of the 10 meetings though the Rockies took a 6-3 win in the final meeting of the season, which came at home on September 20, 2020.

Los Angeles won their first World Series since Kirk Gibson’s famous pinch-hit homer and subsequent limp around the bases off the A’s Dennis Eckersley in 1988 last season. The Dodgers went 43-17 in the regular season to win the NL West by a comfortable six games over San Diego. Los Angeles swept the Brewers in the NL Wild Card round, followed that with a sweep of their NL Division Series set with the Padres.
